Ford started to become attracted to acting when she was a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she wasn't a good for the school. Ford decided to apply instead for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured a position on her fourth try. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring in Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut when she appeared as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1990. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate was also a regular performer in the theatre, and later joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001.
